Why Do We Use Corten Steel?

John Deere World Headquarters. Barclays Center Sports Arena. Breeo X Series Smokeless Fire Pit. What do they all have in common? Corten steel.

The earthy rust tones and texture of Corten steel make it a visual statement piece, while its durability makes it a staple in outdoor structures. Corten Steel isn’t just an aesthetic choice; it’s also a corrosion-resistant material engineered to last.

One of the primary benefits of Corten steel is the patina that it forms over time as it is exposed to the elements. Patina is the rust coating that develops on the fire pit as a layer of protection. It was engineered as a feature of Corten steel to develop relatively quickly and to keep any further corrosion from occurring. Thanks to the patina, your Corten steel fire pit won’t rust any deeper than the surface. If you order a Corten fire pit, it will arrive with a blue/gray finish and will develop the protective patina over time in the elements.

Especially useful in architectural and landscape structures, Corten steel is designed to last and withstand the elements. There are certain environments where Corten will really thrive. Those tend to be places where dry and wet weather conditions alternate, and where there isn’t too much salt in the air.

Wind, heat, rain, snow - you name it. Corten steel is designed to be a four season material. In other words, you won’t have to worry about moving your Corten fire pit in and out of the garage after every use or before every winter.

A couple things to note on Corten Steel. First, the patina can bleed, so you’ll want to be cautious of the surface you use under the fire pit (you’ll also want to make sure that it’s a material that can take the heat).

Second, you can speed the patina process by following particular steps and spraying a mixture of water, dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, salt, and white vinegar on to the Corten as soon as you receive it. This process allows you to develop the patina in your own timing. You'll also want to be sure you're wearing some protective equipment, like gloves and glasses.
